First Book of Sushi (World Snacks)

When I bought this book for our son, I did so on a whim. It seemed like a cute idea and since my husband and I are sushi lovers I decided that it was worth the try. We were not disappointed when we got it! It's beautifully illustrated and well written. We've read it to our son so many times before bed that we now have it memorized and can clearly picture the "Tobiko flying fishy roe, flying from Japan". The Book of Lost Books: An Incomplete History of All the Great Books You'll Never Read

I say this in all sincerity: this is not an appealing book in that the author somehow forgot that people would be trying to read it. That's the best way I know how to summarize my thoughts on this one.

The objective here was to list books which have been either "lost" or they never existed to begin with. Here's an example of the latter: "The Wolf" by Frank Norris which was never written because Frank Norris died before it happened.

A "lost" book featured by Kelly is Geoffrey Chaucer's "Book of the Leoun" whereas it's stated on page 105, "...of which no copies survive". Sometimes specific reasons are offered as to why such books were lost and in some instances Kelly remains a little vague on such points.

It was clear to me that Kelly decided that a little humor, subtly conveyed, might lighten up this possibly boring subject matter. I'll confess to grinning a couple of times but I really wanted to learn about "lost books" and the witty wallpaper sort of got in the way at times -- this is primarily a reference work and I think that the author would have served his readership better if he had eliminated the humor and filled the space with more facts about lost books.

With that, I will say that I extricated some information that was useful to me but I think that Kelly has inadvertently diminished his potentially superb book with a slight mishandling of the text.Buy The Book of Lost Books: An Incomplete History of All the Great Books You'll Never Read!

Book in a Month: The Fool-Proof System for Writing a Novel in 30 Days

I have yet to launch into my month long adventure but I have read through a large majority of this book. The book has a lot of helpful hints on staying focused, not discouraging yourself, and monitoring yourself to get the writing process done quickly - and hopefully with as less pain as possible. The book is set up to be used once, so you would be buying a new one for each book you intend to write. The one downside to the book is I find the spaces in the book your supposed to write in way too small! Otherwise I recommend it to anyone interested in writing a short novel. The Book of Three (The Chronicles of Prydain)

There have already been plenty of reviewers of The Chronicles of Prydain, but I wanted to add just a couple thoughts:

The 5 books are a pleasurable romp through Prydain, a place I might like to visit myself. Taran and his companions are quite likable and engaging, and their adventures are interesting and fun to follow.

My only objection is that Lloyd Alexander doesn't do bad guys very well. At the various points in the stories where villians play a visible role, I found myself scoffing quite a few times at the silly monologuing and posturing.

But these books are for kids, so I won't complain too much.

Complete Book of Juicing: Your Delicious Guide to Youthful Vitality

I love this book. Then again, I love most of the books that I have on juicing. What I like most is the nutritional information presented on the fruits and vegetables in here. I had a limited palate for fruits and vegetables before I ever started juicing. Then I read a Christian health book that promoted juicing and detoxification. I did a serious detox program along with juicing and had dramatic results a couple of years ago. It really made me realize that I was neglecting my health by neglecting nutrition. Later I purchased this book because I wanted more recipes. This book has about 50 and I've tried about 30 of them. What I love about this juicing book is that I can find all of the ingredients where I live. Other juicing books like Gary Null's sound great, but I can't find half of the ingredients he lists. The other less than favorable reviews are also correct in stating that this author slants toward a vegetarian lifestyle and organic fruits and vegetables. Another reviewer also pointed out that several recipes call for ginger and celery which is also true. But you could easily substitute fennel for celery and something else for ginger or don't add the ginger. I am not a vegan but I have no problem with the author's views on those issues. I just wanted to learn more about what I was actually juicing, and the information presented in this book along with a few others, convinced me that juicing is definitely worth the time and investment for good health. I'm not a health nut but I don't trust the quick fix vitamin industry. As someone who is 40 years old, I cannot absorb many vitamins in pill form so I rely on juicing when I feel sluggish or depressed and it always helps me. The key for me having a variety of recipes available so I don't get bored. If you want to incorporate juicing into your lifestyle, I very much doubt that just one juicing book will address all of your problems or issues or have every favorite recipe. That is why I advocate buying more than one book on the subject. Also, look up recipes on the Internet and try those first before you invest in some books. And when you buy the books, either buy them brand new so you can return them if you don't like them, or buy them used from others really cheap.

I bought this for my daughter (age 8) thinking it would be a collection of lots of fun activities and things to do. It has a few things like that, but in fact it is less of an activity book and more of a funny book to read.

It is funny to read because a lot of the advice is tongue-in-cheek (how to annoy people in elevators) but there are only a couple practical things to do in it (finger knitting, whistling).

Instead, get the The Daring Book for Girls which is a lot more oriented toward activities and stuff to do and learn.

The Second Book of the Tao

This is a lovely book and such a beautiful format. Hard cover, with smooth, rich paper, size is 6"x9" so you can easily carry with you or use as a coffee table book. Yum!

I have not read start to finish yet, but rather choose areas that are of interest at the moment. I love reading the translated text (rather adaptations) on the left-handed pages, giving some thought before reading Stephen interpretation/commentary on the right-handed pages, then thought on his interpretation vs. mine. It is quite thought provoking and interesting.

I highly recommend this book!

The Book of the Dead

My family is full of avid readers of the Pendergast books, and as a result refer their friends to Aloyious. This is one of the better books, since you can read any in the series at any point to get "hooked". This one deals with the New York Natural History Library and the fact that there is so much stuff in it that entire exhibits can be there and be lost. That alone is so much food for the imiagination to run wild with! It is well worth the read, but write your name in the book so hopefully you will get it back - you will want to reread!Buy The Book of the Dead!

The Book of Tea

Okakura' small distillation of 'Teaism' is really a survey of Eastern philosophy. He points to Zen and Taoism as the foundational ways of thinking that anchor this idea called Teaism. There are brilliant moments of insight in this small and curious book, with many true assessments of the West's shifting perceptions of Eastern civilization. I am reminded of the late Heidegger's philosophy (and indeed Heidegger read 'The Book of Tea), particularly in essays such as 'The Thing' which point out the significance of our everyday objects and their intimate relationship to world and culture. The Book of Jasher

Whether this is the actual book mentioned in the Bible or a corrupted version of it, the Book of Jasher is an interesting read. I agree with the author of the original translation's introduction as to it probably not being inspired (in the same way the Bible is). Whatever the view one takes on its level of inspiration, the book definitely paints many of the well-known stories from the first six books of the Bible with a more detailed and sometimes fantastic description. From the relationship of Cain and Abel and the events leading to Abel's death, to the various wars in the Middle East during the time of Joshua, this book is definitely entertaining.Buy The Book of Jasher!

Ed Emberley's Drawing Book of Animals

I bought this for my 7 year old nephew but I've had just as much fun with it. There's a wide variety of animals and creatures in the book with patient, step-by-step how-to-draw illustrations for each. There are easy bugs and birds and then more difficult dragons so there's room to practice and grow. Children love how-to-draw books and this is one of the best I've seen.
