The Black Book of Colors

I admit I don't have the smartest fingers in the world, but the Braille in this book has some problems. It's not tactile enough to read by finger, at least not to me. I also wish the Braille were contracted (grade 2) Braille, as is standard; I think this would increase the accessibility for Braille readers, who could well find the book interesting. The tactile pictures, however, are REALLY neat, and I wish I could use similar techniques with my own tactile graphics. I guess I'll have to stick with shirt paint, though. :(

I see a lot of usefulness in this book, despite the shortcomings. It would make me very happy, though, if the Braille problems could be corrected (especially the readability problem, even if uncontracted Braille were still used). Perhaps this can be fixed in the future, although I don't think the book should be marketed as being completely accessible to blind people until then. Buy The Black Book of Colors!

The "What's Happening to My Body" Book for Girls, Revised Third Edition (What's Happening to My Body?)

I'm a 28 year old teacher and mother of two (third due in November), and I grew up on the older version of this book. I was a very curious, information-seeking little girl, and my mom bought this for me when I was 8. I skipped over the chapters on boys and their anatomy for a few years (ew!), but this book taught me everything I wanted to know at the time. I was even known for correcting the sex education teachers' information when it didn't match up with what I had learned here!
Some may think that the information is too advanced for young ones, but if they don't hear the facts they will only believe the crazy (and often disturbing) myths about sex that they hear from their friends. I know that this book helped me to become a well-educated young woman who felt in control of her own body because she understood what was going on. I never felt shame about my body, and was able to maintain my virginity until I was 25--so the abundance of information definitely didn't "ruin" my purity!!

Ball Blue Book of Preserving

My mother and I have canned for years, she is from the depression era. This is a good basic book, but beware, cooking times for chutneys is about 4 hours short. the stuff willtaste like vinegar.
The other ball book is much more complete. The sugar in these rescipes is very high!!! The other ball book has a better intro to explain when you can change sugar ratio. Sugar and vinegar ratios are not, NOT, random numbers. Nor is cooking time!!!! several kinds of food posioning occur when directions are not understood. The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury: Picture Books and Stories to Read Aloud

My daughter purchased this book on my behalf, so I haven't actually seen it, however from the report from my grandaughter my great grandaughter is delighted with it. I live in the UK, my daughter who ordered it is in Spain and my Grandaughter and Great Grandaughter live in the United States, so it was very convenient to order it this way.
