Mystical Mandala Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book)

Dover makes some great coloring books that are inexpensive! I am a big fan of dover coloring books, and own a variety of them. The designs are great in this book, I have another mandala coloring book that i paid quite a bit more for, and i prefer this one because the designs are more detailed where as the more expensive book, the designs are broad, and bland. One downside is that the designs are on the front and back of the page, i use colored pencils so i just put a piece of copy paper between each sheet to avoid rubbing off any color. Not a big enough problem for me to quit buying these books. These coloing book, though they are acceptable for kids, are not just for kids at all!Buy Mystical Mandala Coloring Book (Dover Coloring Book)!

The 39 Clues (The Maze of Bones, Book 1)

As a mother looking for a new series to get my kids into, I was rather disappointed by this first book. As I read it, this first book reminded my of a Hollywood movie, where you had to suspend your disbelief and pretend you really cared about these characters, then maybe you might enjoy it. In short, the two orphan teens travel internationally with their college-aged au pair in search of the second clue of their inheritance treasure, while their cousins and aunts and uncles try to KILL them. Yeah, really wholesome book. The puzzles were not particularly clever and the story not particularly well written. For a book with better characters, more twists, puzzles/clues that readers can actually solve, try the Mysterious Benedict Society.Buy The 39 Clues (The Maze of Bones, Book 1)!

The Digital Photography Book

I like The Digital Photography Book because it is packed with quick tips from how to improve your flower photography to how to keep your subjects from blinking and ruining your shot. This book tells you what setting to use for the occasion and lighting, not necessarily the why. Each tip is kept to one page and although most could easily read through the whole book in a day, you will return to reread the tips often. The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literary Assessment and Instruction

Surely, if you are reading this review, you are probably a fan or a devotee of this book: Daily Five, The, the book that provided a framework for literacy instruction that revolutionized classrooms across the country. After implementing "the Sisters" authentic literacy practices, teachers around the country asked, "What's next?" and the Sisters responded by writing "The Cafe Book". It's certainly a worthy partner of their first book.

Washingtonians Gail Boushey and Joan Moser are veteran master teachers, reflective, and insightful in their approach to the craft of education. This book provides the classroom tested, works in progress reading teaching that is happening in their classroom. The CAFE approach allows children to select literacy goals based on their reading needs (comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary), gives a framework for conferring with students, and offers tons of classroom tested tips and hints to make your reading teaching more successful.

The Sisters writing is very transparent, examples of actual "language" they use with the kids, and extremely user friendly. Unlike some other education books, which require hours of time, or a master's degree to understand, the Sisters make their books easily accessible, easily understandable, and easy to put into practice. Not only that, the lessons and ideas are mighty powerful indeed.

Don't worry. If you haven't implemented the Daily 5 into your classroom, the Cafe book can easily meet your needs as it provides yet another framework that can be adapted in your classroom. However, I can see the power of implementing both ideas into the room for true impact. If you are a newbie, I can't highly recommend enough "Daily 5". As a mentor with first year teachers, I've seen the impact of the framework on their daily reading block, and it's been quite amazing.

Not only is the book loaded with pictures, but it comes with a CD that is ready to be used, with copies of the forms they have in the book that can be printed out.

The Sisters are truly on the path of authentic, real life teaching practices. If you are a first year or twentieth year teacher like myself, in kindergarten or in fifth grade, this book will be an irreplaceable feature, and one that's frequently borrowed by colleagues after you brag about its impact, for years to come.

Yes, it's THAT good.Buy The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literary Assessment and Instruction!

Parenting by The Book: Biblical Wisdom for Raising Your Child

I'm a semi-reg. reader of the kindly dr's wkly online col.(rosemond.com). To believe his detractors, you'd think Dr.R. suggested acoutering oneself w/ jackboots, a monacle, & a riding crop, & let fly w/ the leather at the sligtest provocation. I won't turn this into an editorial on spanking, although I'm not opposed to the practice in limited circumstances/amts.

It's unfair to take 1% of what the man says, & ignore the other 99%. For that matter, his website has "Position Statement on Spanking" (google the phrase exactly). As an observer of human behavior, I could supply one w/ more instances of parents at McD's being unable to get their children to leave the vid.games to come to the table to fill a book itself: "Come 'n eat, Brandon. Brandon? NOW. NOW, Brandon. Brandon? ONE. ONE, Brandon. Brandon? ONE. Why don't you listen? If you don't come & eat, you can't drive when you're 16...". When my dad said to come & eat, we did. When my step-dad said it, we did it quickly.

Kids're happier when the pilot flying the plane that is their life can get them from A to B w/ skill & confidence, which doesn't happen w/a modern "consensus-seeking" pilot who keeps running back to the passenger cabin to ask Brandon how they should handle the icing conditions ahead, then wait for him to decide based not on what's safest, but instead what screws w/ authority the most. Little Brandon has his worthiness as a human "affirmed" -- "just because he is". Now let's fly straight to our doom, w/ our ill-considered principles intact. He's the little twerp in the booth next to me who ruins dinner for 20 other people while he expresses himself. Isn't he presh-usss? He's more precious than citizenship, civility, or anyone else's desire to be treated as they treat their fellow diners.

Which situation uses up all the oxygen for happiness instead for protracted, low-level hostility -- one w/ a dispassionate referee who sees all, knows what constitutes an infraction, calls them instantly(no eye contact), assesses a pentalty & lets play resume immed'ly? Now imagine a modern physcho-babble ref' who'd stop play to resolve conflict, teach emphathy, & appeal to the smirking offender's sense of humanity to change his behavior, because there's good in us all... You'd have bedlam, & bedlam is what I see routinely at McD's including one mother who couldn't demand/plead/beg/threaten/reason her $18 SuperCuts-coiffed botique-brat to come & eat his melting ice-cream cone, so SHE took it over to HIM & followed 'im around holding it while he ate & ignored her!! Training has taken place, & his mother's well-trained. Imagine this kid 4' taller, & 130lbs heavier. Remember: it's the baby elephant w/the iron chain around one leg, & the mother elephant tied w/rope she could easily break. One tries repeatedly to break his restaint, & one's learned to practice restraining herself, so to speak.

Noteworthy: at this McD's, it's not uncommon to see Mennonite or Amish kids. If you swapped clothing w/ the OLD NAVY botique-brats & the "religious cult throwbacks", you could still tell 'em apart. The Amish & Mennonite are the happy, quiet, peaceful & serene kids I want to sit next to.

Dr.R.'s affirmation of limited use of spanking [w/"spanking" itself limited by his clear, restrictive def.] does not alter his message of traditional methods of authority & leadership instilling character instead of the modern wishy-washy, quest for "giving" un-earned & un-deserved self-esteem creating ultimately unhappy, bratty little tyrants with an over-developed sense of entitlement.

For, those, whom thou think'st, thou dost overthrow,
Die not, poore death, nor yet canst thou kill me.
From rest and sleepe, which but thy pictures bee,
Much pleasure, then from thee, much more must flow,
And soonest our best men with thee doe goe,
Rest of their bones, and soules deliverie.
Thou art slave to Fate, Chance, kings, and desperate men,
And dost with poyson, warre, and sicknesse dwell,
And poppie, or charmes can make us sleepe as well,
And better then thy stroake; why swell'st thou then;
One short sleepe past, wee wake eternally,
And death shall be no more; death, thou shalt die.

The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child

Donalyn Miller's passion for reading is quite obvious when reading this book. She reminds me of myself: I am an avid reader who carries a book wherever I go just in case I can "steal" a few minutes reading while waiting for an appointment, a traffic jam to unwind, etc.

She also loves being a teacher. She loves her job, respects her students and shares her love for books and reads with her students. She learns her students' personal reading preferences by making them fill out surveys at the start of the school year. Those who don't like to read learn to love to read by the end of the school year.

Her tips make a lot of sense. She suggests the reading teacher do the following: develop a personal library, create reading workshops, initiate book groups, allow students to read books they enjoy and don't demand book reports, have a reading corner with comfortable furniture available, and give the students some empowerment by working with their personal reading interests. If a student can read at least 30 minutes a day then the student is on its way on becoming a book whisperer.

One good tip for teachers: read more children's books and take recommendations from your students on what you should read.

According to Miller, there are three types of readers: the Developing reader, the Dormant (reluctant) reader and the Underground (gifted) reader. All can overcome their hesitance to read if teachers allow them to choose their own books to read. Her class day starts every day with fifteen minutes of "Independent Reading" where students can read whatever they want, a book, a magazine, a picture book, silently. If a book doesn't interest them after a few minutes, they can try another book. If they want to read an old favorite they have already read, they can read it again. She is there to mentor the students. And she reads in class as well, to be a role model.

Although the students chose the books they want to read, Miller does have a few requirements that they must follow: of the 40 book requirement, five must be poetry anthologies, five must be traditional literature, five must be realistic fiction, another five historical fiction, four must be fantasy, two must be science fiction, two must be mysteries, four must be informational, two must be autobiographical, and nine must be chapter-book choices. She then discusses various genres and lets the students define the individual terms. This is how she adheres to her state's required curriculum standards.

What works for Miller is that she also teaches social studies. If her class is studying a time such as World War II, she suggests reading books that deal with that war. This helps students become more engaged in all aspects of literature and history.

But there is more to just silent, independent reading. Instead of dreaded book reports (She prefers book reviews); she has her students discuss the books they have read. She discusses genre, writing styles, themes, content. (Is there a book she hasn't read?) Students are also required to maintain a reading notebook journal.

All these tips make sense, but my question as an educator is how can these tips work for the middle and especially the high school student? I taught six grade once and the students were still in love with reading, but a few grades later, plagued with hormonal overdrive, reading got replaced with texting, iPoding, and emailing.

One thing that is crucial to implementing Donalyn's strategies is having a principal and a school district that will support these reading endeavors. Yes, reading what one enjoys reading does develop a stronger reader and a more compassionate and civic-minded citizen, but this is harder to implement when most class hours are 60 minutes or less. In Miller's instance, classes were 90 minutes long; long enough to have independent reading before marching on to other requirements.

My two questions, however, didn't get answered. Can a teacher make a student who has poor English comprehension, become an avid reader in an English-speaking classroom? And how can we get teenagers in high school to learn to love reading?

No doubt Miller is an excellent teacher and her school should be proud of her, but I go away from this book resigned to the fact that her style and her advice are best for elementary school teachers. For someone like me who deals mostly with high school kids, this book is not quite helpful enough.

Still, her book was a great read. Her love for her students is very obvious.

The Book of Dead Philosophers (Vintage)

The author, Simon Critchley, needed to tone down the editorializing; his own professorial, high-handed voice definitely watered down the strength and profundity of some of his subjects. Also, the sense of "humor" utilized by the author makes it clear that the humor itself was an afterthought, that despite the intrinsically humorous subject matter (philosophers drowning in manure, or flinging themselves into volcanoes), he felt it necessary to include "jokes" as a professor would include in his lecture to the quiet, placative faux-amusement of his students. Now and then, the subject matter is too serious in print to warrant flippancy. It softens the voice even more, and I know the author meant for this book to be widely read and accessible, but it does no one any good to water down and soften the profound messages of 3000 year old philosophers in order to accommodate a more common ear. The strength and purpose of this book is in the facts, what the philosophers said, and how they died. It is not hard to relate one to the other, and I wish the author had kept his opinions and extrapolations and interpretations and associations to himself. Those who are interested in philosophy will buy a book for the merits of its philosopher(s); an example is Isiah Berlin's "Russian Thinkers." Serious, strong, and clear, with facts upon facts, in a very readable style. It sold quite well.
Otherwise, "The Book of Dead Philosophers" is informative, detailed, and a work of the author's own passion. I just wish the passion could have been a little more reverent, a little more pure, a little more evident in the scholarship department, even if Critchley is a professor.Buy The Book of Dead Philosophers (Vintage)!

My Little Red Book

As the title and cover may suggest, this is a book about first periods. Women of various ages, family situations, and ethnicities share their memories of menarche. The stories cover the full range of emotions one might expect: glee, embarassment, self-satisfaction, disappointment, and misery. There are numerous stories collected in this volume, but each is quite short. I would have preferred longer pieces and fewer of them. After a point they become repetitive, and I learned that there is definitely such a thing as a first period trope. Longer narratives that contextualized first periods within the larger context of adolescence would have offered more variety. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the editor is an eighteen-year-old college student. This certainly shows some initiative. I do think that the book's title, taken from Mao's manifesto, shows more useful enthusiasm than truly thoughtful use of the metaphor. This book is not directed at any one particular audience, but will be most useful, I suspect, to girls. I certainly would have read such a book with morbid curiosity about twenty years ago. Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book

I bought two of these journals, one for my 11 year old nephew and one for a nine year old boy. Both boys are fans of the "Wimpy Kid" Series. I sat with each of the boys after they received the gift, flipping through the pages and listening to their answers to the questions. They had a great time thinking about their responses and enjoyed sharing them with me. Not only did we laugh and have fun reading the book, but also I got to know them a bit better by hearing their answers, many of which require creativity and imaginiation.

My nephew was so excited by the book, that he read portions of it to his family, and any friends who visited, throughout the duration of my visit (when I gave him the book). His 12 year old brother was spotted reading the book on a few occasions too!

The book has a nice balance of questions about life accomplishments and experiences (i.e. Have you ever stayed up all night? ) and ideas about the future (i.e. How much will a cheeseburger cost in 20 years? Who will be President in 20 years?). It also provides space for children to draw cartoons.

I like the fact that children can do this book on their own and since the questions asked are not too personal, they can also sit with an adult and share their ideas and responses. Buy Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book!

Now she reads the book over & over every night!

Return Engagement (Settling Accounts Trilogy, Book 1)

I downloaded this book to Kindle because it was one of the free offers for the month, and I thought I'd try a new author. I'm afraid I didn't enjoy it much. I normally compulsively finish books I begin, but I deleted this one from Content Manager after the first two chapters.

The storyline is that the South is fighting the North again, but this time, it is in the 1940's and the North has a Socialist President. And at least one female, single-mom, Socialist congresswoman. The story is written from the congresswoman's POV, and very much emphases intelligence and understanding over physical strength, so you'd think it would appeal to a woman, but it didn't hold my attention. I always felt as though I were reading a book, rather than slipping into another world.

I did enjoy the free download of Charlie Huston's book (Caught Stealing) and am looking forward to reading more of Huston's books. Buy Return Engagement (Settling Accounts Trilogy, Book 1)!

Even if you don't have chemical sensitivities, it is probably better to live your life without the added out gassing that many home products give.

If you are so fortunate to build your own home, then this book is a must read for ideas and ways to make it less chemically and more ventilated. The ventilation sections were some of my favorites as I currently rent and am always looking at methods to keep my old (and probably chemically laden home) well ventilated.

Open the Barn Door (A Chunky Book(R))

I ordered this book for my daughter when she was about 9 months old. She is now 12 months old and it's still her favorite book. She loves to turn the flap to discover the animals. Additionally, it's small and fits in her little hands perfectly. I find her in a corner sometimes turning the pages and jabbering like she's reading it and we love reading it together over and over. This book is a must have for any child's book collection.Buy Open the Barn Door (A Chunky Book(R))!

My Big Animal Book (My Big Board Books)

I purchased this book for my 2-year old. She loves looking through the pictures as I ask her to find each one. My 3-year old also likes going through it with his sister. He especially enjoys the little quiz at the bottom of each page -- one descriptive question per page. It is great for the both of them! The picture book includes baby animals, pets, farm animals, birds, and zoo animals. Buy My Big Animal Book (My Big Board Books)!

Blood Engines (Marla Mason, Book 1)

The only thing I can say in it's favor is that its free.

I had a very hard time getting through this. At first it was mainly the writing style turning me off. Characters are constantly rehashing things they both know to spell it out for the reader. As the story went on I discovered no character development to speak of. While I don't expect much from a first novel in the way of character growth, I do expect the writer to make me cheer for the hero or heroine. I couldn't. I spent half the book hoping that the buses that Marla hated so much would run her over. The characters and their relationships to one another are shallow and uninteresting. The only character I felt any sympathy for was the ensnared snake god and he's declared Marla his mortal enemy.

While I hope for the author's sake that he improves by the second, I won't be picking it up.Buy Blood Engines (Marla Mason, Book 1)!

Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)

This book was modestly entertaining, albeit a bit stupid...the thing that annoyed me was that it didn't really let you know it was a fairy-tale of sorts until further into the book, by which time I was far enough I didn't want to abandon. Not terrible, but also not the greatest thing every published, that's for sure. Make believe story with supernatural abilities of main characters -- a bit over the top versus what I expected.Buy Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)!

Vision in White (The Wedding Quartet, Book 1)

I have read most of what Nora Roberts has written and I enjoy driving up to Maryland from North Carolina for her books signings. I really am a fan. That said, this was boring. I'm used to a many layered plot and this is straight forward. Girl meets Boy. Girl has commitment problems (ok, I guess that counts as a twist). There are good reasons, but you know from the beginning that those problems will have to be resolved. The only interesting bits are the wedding disaster stories, which are enjoyable. The hero is a nice guy, the heroine a nice woman, the supporting characters fairly supportive, the mother a hag, but there are no real surprises. I know Ms Roberts said that she was going back to her romance roots but even back in the Silhouette days there was usually more substance to the stories than this. This is just a nice story, and I've come to expect more. I will definitely buy the second book, because I have to believe that this is a fluke, and I hope that Bed of Roses is good enough to increase my excitement over the rest of the series. Still, I don't mind having to wait until December for book 2 after reading book 1.

Just as an aside, I got the audio download version and the reader does nothing to improve the story. Emily Durante isn't as bad as Marie Caliendo but Brilliance Audio has a fine list of narrators, and usually a Nora Roberts book gets one of the best. Durante's reading is fairly flat and doesn't do anything to improve the story experience.

Not to say don't read it, but maybe wait until your local library has a copy available.

The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library)

My mother got this book for me when I was 10, and I have to say that it was the most amazing thing at the time. It really helped me feel more comfortable, knowing what was going on with my body, and how to handle it. It helped me talk to my mom about some of the things I was going through, and I know my mom was relieved that it was so simple.

I'm 20 now and still have it. I plan to give it to my daughter when she's ten, because I think it's such a fantastic book.Buy The Care & Keeping of You: The Body Book for Girls (American Girl Library)!
